EXPERIENCE

Art Director and Designer / Alicia Mikles Design 2005-present / Work with a variety of creative professionals and publishing houses as described below to publish books traditionally or self-publish. Past and current clients include HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Rizzoli, Chronicle Books, Marshall Cavendish and others.

Art Director / HarperCollins Publishers 2001-2005 / Responsible for all aspects of picture book and novel design from initial concept and sketches in consultation with illustrator, author, editor, creative director, sales, etc., through dummy process, all mechanical stages, preparation files for printing, and reviewing 4C proofs with the production manager for Joanna Cotler Books and Laura Geringer Books. Worked with many of the industrys’ top artists and authors such as Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell, Clive Barker, Sharon Creech, Jim and Kate McMullan, Doreen Cronin and Harry Bliss, William Steig, Francesca Lia Block, David Diaz, Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond, William Joyce, Brian Selznick, Karla Kuskin, Richard Egielski, David Gordon, Sarah Weeks, and Brett Helquist. Designed many best-selling series such Abarat, The I Stink! books, the David Gordon truck books, the Diary of a Worm books, and the If You Give A… books. Selected/edited artwork and designed Clive Barker’s Visions of Heaven and Hell, published by Rizzoli.

Associate Art Director / HarperCollins Publishers 1999-2001 / Designed frontlist lead titles, both picture books and novels, for Joanna Cotler Books and Laura Geringer Books. Responsible for all aspects of book design from initial concept and sketches to finished book. Color-corrected proofs for jacket and interiors and went on-press. Also supervised an assistant/reprint designer, freelance designers and reviewed artist portfolios.

Imprint Design Supervisor / HarperCollins Publishers 1998-1999 / Designed frontlist lead titles, both picture books and novels, for Joanna Cotler Books and Laura Geringer Books. Responsible for all aspects of book design from initial concept and sketches to finished book. Color-corrected proofs for jacket and interiors. Also supervised an assistant/reprint designer, freelance designers and reviewed artist portfolios.

Designer / HarperCollins Publishers 1996-1997 / Designed books for the I Can Read program. Responsible for all aspects of book design from initial sketches to finished book.

Designer / HarperCollins Publishers 1994-1995 / Designed books and novelties for the Little House program. Responsible for all aspects of book and product design from initial sketches to finished book.

Design Assistant / HarperCollins Publishers 1993-1994 / Assisted two Art Directors in all aspects of their work. Maintained artist files and designed reprints.

Teaching Assistant / New York State Summer School for the Arts 1992 / Gave lectures, demonstrations, and individual instruction to high school age art students on printmaking techniques. Participated in field trips and in organizing group exhibitions.
